Initial Assessment Task Evaluation

To create our promotional video and poster we started with the video and by each coming up with different themes and ideas then when we felt we had enough  we tried settling on one we thought we liked best but as always there was a difference in opinions so we voted on which idea we liked the most and as there was only one vote against we went with the idea which got the majority vote which was to create what seems like a traditional, happy and normal video but as most college students know college isn’t always happy, sometimes its stressful and occasionally rage inducing so the idea was to explore that by adding a few “glitches” in the video where it be dark, horrid and fast paced for a few seconds to then return to the happy parts.
As I wasn’t familiar with the editing software or the campus I asked who was and one person said they had done a previous short film and knew a few locations for where we could film the glitch parts and someone was ok with the editing so we started a mind map about our idea and how we would execute it by each adding to the categories of locations, shots, angles, depth of space, sound design and the pace of each shots. This helped a lot as when we got the cameras we had already planned out our locations and such.
For the filming we had an array of angles and shots for example for the happy parts we had angles like Dutch, eye level, low angle and high angle then for the shots we had a few long and wide shots to show off the collage and we made them from the height that a student would see the college to show the experience furthermore we showed the more popular areas such as the Starbucks, the Macs in the library and the front of Arts academy building.
We showed shots of little amounts of people to make It seem more like a friendly environment and make it look more enticing rather than a mass amount of people because we felt it would look cramped and claustrophobic.
For the glitch scenes we wanted to contrast it completely by using some close up shots and even some POV shots, we then used some shots where we paned up and paned right and left then zoomed as well as for the lighting we decided to use chiaroscuro as we thought it would darken and obscure the perception of the collage, these shots didn’t have anyone in them to make it look as uninviting as possible for theses short seconds to jolt people into anticipation.
We used a canon camera and used the hand held technique as it didn’t matter for the promotional part as we wanted to just used still frames to give the impression that it’s been set up and suspicious then the glitch parts where quite shaky to be disorientating to make you feel uncomfortable.
However even though our filming and everything else went accordingly the editing aspect was a bit of a challenge as our designated editor didn’t actually have that much experience I then tried to help out and as none of us were any good it became a challenge, we completed it but as we didn’t have enough time to edit it in the way we wanted nor the time to get experienced with Premier pro and everyone else was finished and was waiting on us we then had to rush and it didn’t turn out with the standard we hoped but I do feel if we had more time to familiarize ourselves with the application then it would have had the impact we wanted but we definitely developed our knowledge and understanding of premier pro.
Our poster reflected our video with a glitch aesthetic which was developed by a am member with knowledge of Photoshop and developed the poster to the best of her ability with her own ideas such as covering grey and bad photos with good ones.
